Kettle’s Yard the ever evolving contemporary art gallery in Cambridge is holding a multi-million pound selling exhibition. Seminal works donated by leading British Artists, Damien Hirst, Bridget Riley, Antony Gormley, David Hockney, Michael Craig-Martin, David Nash, Sir Anthony Caro, and Maggi Hambling will go on sale from tomorrow.The proceeds of the sale will go towards a new education wing for the gallery,designed by architect Jamie Fobert. The development will also provide a new project gallery, an extended art library and collection storage. Supporters include the Monument Trust, the Edlis-Neeson Foundation, the Foyle Foundation, and the Sir Siegmund Warburg Voluntary Settlement. Some of the works were donated by the artists others by collectors galleries and the estates of Kenneth Martin, Barbara Hepworth and Josef and Anni Albers. The range of artists, as well as collectors, donating to the exhibition reflects the scope of the exhibition programme that Kettle’s Yard has presented. Their generous support is an indication of the value they place on the gallery.The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see some of the biggest names in contemporary art and by the looks of the catalogue the works are significant. So far over £2 million has been raised since the appeals launch at the Tate. Kettle’s Yard is a necessary balance to the historical collections of the Fitzwilliam and a lively and living place to experience art.” Anthony Gormley, best known for his Angel of the North said: “Kettle’s Yard is an invaluable visual resource for the university and town that combines a foundational collection made at the birth of modernism in Britain with an evolving programme of contemporary art.Director Michael Harrison has been astonished and delighted by the generosity of the artists who have donated.
