Film London in association with the Whitechapel Gallery have announced the 2013 line up of UK-based contemporary artists for the sixth edition of the annual Jarman Award. The 10 strong shortlist for the 2013 award comprises: Ed Atkins; Beatrice Gibson; Emma Hart; Rachel Maclean; Uriel Orlow; Charlotte Prodger;  Hannah Sawtell; Grace Schwindt;  John Smith; and  Jessica Warboys.

The winner will be announced at a special event on 6 November at the Whitechapel Gallery and will receive combined prize money of £10,000 as well as a film commission for Channel 4's short-form arts strand, Random Acts. Three further shortlisted artists will also be selected for Random Acts commissions, worth £16,000 in total.

Nominated by experts across the UK contemporary film and arts sectors, the shortlist brings together 10 artists who use the film and video medium in a range of diverse and uncompromising ways. It offers a comprehensive survey of the work and practice of UK based film and video artists, and celebrates the rich and eclectic array of work emerging in recent years.

The 2013 Jury who will select this year's winner are: Stuart Comer film curator, Tate Modern (Chair); Iwona Blazwick OBE, Director, Whitechapel Gallery; Tabitha Jackson, Commissioning Editor for Arts, Channel 4, Carol Morley, film-maker, Omar Kholeif, curator, writer and editor; artists Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead (Thomson & Craighead); and Francesca Gavin, Visual Arts Editor at Dazed & Confused.

Launched in 2008, the Film London Jarman Award gives recognition and support to artists working with the moving image and whose work resists conventional definition, encompassing innovation and excellence. The Award is inspired by visionary avant-garde film-maker Derek Jarman, one of the most esteemed and controversial artists of the late 20th Century. Previous winners include -Luke Fowler (2008), Lindsay Seers (2009), Emily Wardill (2010), Anya Kirschner & David Panos (2011), and James Richards (2012).

This is an especially important year for the Award as it immediately precedes the  20th year commemorations in 2014 of Derek Jarman's death, which will include the publication of new books and see the artist and his work celebrated through a number of exhibitions and screening programmes nationwide.

Film London will present a UK-wide Jarman Award touring programme throughout September and October 2013, showcasing works by the 10 shortlisted artists. Events will take place at venues including FACT, Liverpool, CCA, Glasgow, Nottingham Contemporary and the Star and Shadow Cinema in Newcastle. The tour will culminate in a special weekend of screenings, Q&As and performances at the Whitechapel Gallery across Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 November. Full details of the touring programme, including further dates, will be announced shortly.

Visit the Jarman Award section of the FLAMIN website for more information and to view clips of work by each of the shortlist.
