Karen Bradley, a former Home Office minister, is to take over as Secretary of State  for Culture, Media and Sport in Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle after John Whittingdale was sacked.

Bradley, a former chartered accountant and tax advisor for firms including Deloitte and KPMG, was elected as an MP for Staffordshire Moorlands in 2010 and has served as Home Office minister responsible for preventing abuse, exploitation and crime and as a government whip.

John Whittingdale’s position lasted a little more than 12 months but during that time he oversaw a government review of the future of the BBC (still to be completed) and was questioned about his suitability to decide press regulation after his former relationship with a sex worker was revealed.

In the government review of the BBC, Whittingdale had called for the BBC to concentrate on producing 'distinctive content' rather than merely chasing ratings.  He also announced that it was a requirement for the BBC to publish names of stars and executives earning more than £450,000 a year.

" Please, can we stop the tick box style orientation of selection by arts organisations such as the BFI and The Art Council Of Great Britian. The selection process for arts funding has become like a dog eared exercise to massage figures and make the organisation look worthy, rather than a real place for British individuality and talent to emerge. The main priority should be to help talent and innovation emerge that would not have done with out the extra support. Selection should go on merit alone, not on any preconceived targets. The tick box system of points during applications, for funding has resulted in a politicizing of art and cultural engineering, and could even be seen as some form of using artists to provide propaganda.
