The Garage Centre for Contemporary Arts announced today that Kate Fowle, the former Co-Director of the London based curatorial partnership Smith + Fowle will become Chief Curator at the organisation in Moscow. She will be part of a highly promising team that includes Hans Ulrich Obrist, International Programme Adviser and all around go to curator, art historian, and critic.

Fowle will be based between New York and Moscow where she will begin work with Garage in Spring 2013 at it’s new location in Gorky Park which is designed by Rem Koolhaas and is due to open in 2014. Garage is hoping that this new role will allow Fowle to foster relationships with major organisations both in Moscow and on the international level. Given Fowle’s previous experience this is a position she will be well suited for. She says this about Garage: "Working with the industrious team at Garage is a great opportunity to create a unique institution in Moscow, to build new international collaborations with artists and curators and to bring audiences forward-thinking exhibitions that reflect the energy of our times."

Before her work at Smith + Fowle, Fowle was curator at Towner Art Gallery and Museum in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Which positioned her for a move to New York where she began work in 2009 as the Executive Director of ICI. During her time with Garage Fowle will still maintain her Directorial role at the ICI where she will continue building and international reputation in support of artists. Even before her time in New York her career was solidified by becoming the inaugural International Curator of the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing followed in 2002 and 2007 by becoming Chair of the Master’s Program in Curatorial Practice at California College of the Arts, San Francisco, which she co-founded with Ralph Rugoff.

Fowle has worked previously with Obrist to great effect developing the 20th Anniversary version of do it during her time with the ICI in New York. She established the ICI Exhibitions in a Box and Project 35 exhibitions series and instigated the Curatorial Intensive first short-course training program for working curators around the world. She is a seemingly unstoppable force in the art world and will bring years of expertise to Garage, a highly anticipated project developing in the frosty East.

Garage is a major non-profit organisation that opened it’s doors in 2008 and is determined to change the culture landscape in Russia by developing the local and the international reach of a new generation of contemporary Rusian artists. These aims are explored through a series of exhibitions ranging from major surveys of important collections to single-artist retrospectives and group exhibitions. Garage also hosts a strong program of special events, including talks, film screenings, workshops, performances and creative activities for children and young people.  In addition, Garage launched a joint publishing program with Ad Marginem Press in 2012. Garage is a project of the IRIS foundation and is founded by Dasha Zhukova
