Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, paid a secret visit last week to an Islington art therapy charity, The Art Room, after they wrote to her asking for royal support

Kate has been visiting a number of charities and organisations in recent weeks in preparation for her new role as a working Royal. The purpose of this particular visit to Islington’s Robert Blair primary school in on Wednesday was to find out more about The Art Room – an arts therapy charity with a branch at the school that works with children who are disruptive, withdrawn, or have learning difficulties, to ‘increase self-esteem, self-confidence and independence through art’.

Parents were only informed of the visit on the day, via a text message from the school which read; ‘If your child comes home and says they saw Kate Middleton today, it’s true! We had a surprise visit from the DOC to The Art Room.’ According to one mother, ‘All the children waited for her outside in the car park and they got to wave at her’, while ‘there were nine students in The Art Room who got to meet her’.

The charity wants the funding it needs to provide five-days-a-week support for youngsters at its four centres – three in Oxford, one in London. A spokesman for the Duchess commented that Kate has yet confirm exactly which patronages she will take on, but that The Art Room is one that she is definitely interested in working with: ‘The Art Room wrote to her and caught her eye’, the spokesperson explained, and so, ‘She went to find out more about their work’.
