Lisson Gallery Exhibits New Works By Jason Martin

Bookmark and Share

The Lisson Gallery has announced an exhibition of new works by Jason Martin. Martin is known for the distinctive physicality and heavy textures of his abstract paintings.
The exhibition sees Martin venturing further into the realm between painting and sculpture, working in new mediums and pursuing concerns with mass, form and weight, the elemental issues of sculpture. It includes at its centre new departures in his artistic practice: an imposing sculpture in cork and a series of copper, bronze and nickel castings. Divided into three distinct spaces, the show also includes the finest examples to-date of Martin’s oil paints on aluminium.
Martin has always questioned the limits of painting. The rough reliefs of his pigment paintings beg to be understood from every angle, reaching out, tempting to be touched. Martin works monochromatically, using the structural properties of a colour as a starting point for every piece, basing his choice on tactile qualities and from there building with the colour as a sculptor might. Similarly tactile are Martin’s new works in which he explores and moulds materials directly with his hands before casting in a variety of metals. Foregoing any relationship to conventional artistic tools, the impact of the body creates raw and primal results.
