London Photo Festival 2015 Winners announced

London Photo Festival 2015

The Best in Show and runners up have been announced at the 8th London Photo Festival. Will Scott was this May’s judge and the theme was ‘architecture which included street photography’, as long as it contained an element of architecture.

‘I spent a really enjoyable evening judging the entries at the 6th London Photo Festival held at The Crypt Borough High Street, with some great work on display. I think what was especially nice to see was the variety in the work as well as some of the more original offerings, such as Estelle Vincent’s work who I commended. Also worth a mention those who submitted work shot on film, some of which was developed by them! There seems to be so much derivative and unoriginal work online these days so it was refreshing to see something new.

The judging was very hard! The runners up (2nd): Phil Carey with ‘If Buildings talked’ – this image really stood out, as it was not only humorous but also had a serious message and was a part of a wider series on the changing state of architecture in London – someone to keep an eye on I would say.

1st runner up Matt Emmett  (‘Subterranean Victorian Cistern’)- Matt had 3 very strong images and clearly knows what he is doing. Again, a very striking image – technically superb, as it required lighting – which he did excellently, really adding depth to the image. Matt’s website is worth a look (as I did after the show!!)

Best in show – Uwe Kosa with ‘Leisure Time’ – a really stunning shot, all 3 of Uwe’s entries were top drawer. This shot drew me in and kept my attention far longer than any other image. A dark, brooding shot – like a scene from a film noir. A very worthy winner.”

Uwe said; ‘Thank you very much for your warm welcome at the exhibition – and for the really nice surprise. I had no idea whatsoever that one of my photos would be “the best in show” and I’m more than happy about this.”  2nd Runner up Phil Carey; ‘My main purpose for putting photographs into the London Photo Festival is to get a practical  insight into what makes a good photograph, and to observe if/ how people interact with my images when they shown with others. Being picked as second runner up is a great privilege but the real learning came from understanding the judges thought process and rational of why he selected mine and the winners.’

Will’s honourable mentions were: Josh Chow ‘Clockwork Puzzle’, Markus Eichenberger ‘Water’ and Estelle Vincent’s ‘Reconsturciton of Beirut’.

Markus commented: ‘It was a great event with a lot of exceptional photos. Emma and Kit did a great job organizing the event. I am proud to be part of the festival. It was great to talk to so many people and share my experiences. It also gave me the opportunity to meet people from the photography industry and do some networking. I highly recommend being part of the festival. I just had a great experience.”

The Festival had a new addition to the exhibition and exhibited 62 retro style prints on their Retro Wall and they hope to make this a permanent feature.

The public also had their say by voting in the Festival’s hotly contested f/Factor competition and the winner was Matt Emmett (‘Subterranean Victorian Cistern’), Debbie Jaye ‘Italiano Architecttura’  was second and third place: Tony Sellen ‘We are Proud Individuals.’

Matt Emmett; ‘I am thrilled to have placed 1st Runner-Up and winner of the f/Factor competition at the London Photo Festival. I am working hard at building my profile and this award from one of London’s better known photography events will really help’

“We created the London Photo Festival in 2011 to showcase up and coming talent and to provide new and emerging photographers with an opportunity to exhibit their work, have it professionally appraised and sell their work to the public.  We will be holding our 9th Festival in May 2016 and we hope to continue to grow and promote photographers from around the globe,” said Emma Mapp and Kit Shah, Co-founders of the London Photo Festival.

The London Photo Festival will return in May 2016
