Luc Tuymans Retrospective Announced For Qatar Museums

A retrospective of the work of Luc Tuymans has been announced at the Qatar Museums. It will be the first solo show of the artist in the Gulf region. 

The exhibition, Intolerance, a comprehensive survey with more than 150 works, will include a series of wall paintings and a new body of work, ‘The Arena’, created specifically for the show. Curated by Lynne Cooke, Senior Curator of Special Projects in Modern Art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue edited by Lynne Cooke and Tommy Simoens.

Belgian artist Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) is one of the key figures of a new generation of figurative painters, widely credited with having contributed to the revival of painting in the 1990s.  His works are featured in museum collections worldwide including The Art Institute of Chicago; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; MoMA, New York; Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York; and Tate Gallery, London.  Among his major solo shows are a presentation of the artist’s portraits, Nice. Luc Tuymans, at The Menil Collection, Houston in 2013. Previous major survey shows include those organised by Moderna Museet Malmö, Sweden in 2009 and Tate Modern, London in 2004.  In 2001, the artist represented Belgium at the 49th Venice Biennale.  He lives and works in Antwerp.

Lynne Cooke is a renowned art scholar.  She became Senior Curator, Special Projects in Modern Art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington in 2014.  Her previous posts have included Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Museo Nacional Centre de Art Reina Sofia, Madrid (2008-2012), Curator, Dia Art Foundation, New York (1991-2008), Artistic Director 10th Biennale of Sydney (1994-1996).  She has organised numerous exhibitions including Cristina Iglesias at Casa Franca-Brasil, Rio de Janiero (2013), Rosemarie Trockel at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, New Museum, New York and Serpentine Gallery, London (2012-2013), Richard Serra, co-curated with Kynaston McShine, at MoMA New York (2007).

Qatar Museums, founded in 2005 under the guidance of Chairperson Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has become one of the leading cultural authorities in the region.  Currently QM has two museums open to the public: The Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I M Pei, opened in 2008, and The Arab Museum of Modern Art, Mathaf, which opened in 2011.  QM also has two public galleries, Al Riwaq Doha, a large-scale exhibition space in the ground of the Museum of Islamic Art and the QM Gallery at Katara.  Other museums are currently under planning or construction including the new Qatar National Museum designed by Jean Nouvel and the Orientalist Museum designed by Herzog & de Meuron.

Over the last seven years, since its public opening, Qatar Museums has presented a series of major solo exhibitions by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists including Etel Adnan, Louise Bourgeois, Cai Guo-Qiang, Mona Hatoum, Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Shirin Neshat, Yan Pei-Ming, Wael Shawky, Richard Serra, Francesco Vezzoli, as well as developing significant opportunities for the development of artists in the region, most recently, the Fire Station, a major new studio and gallery space, providing residencies and mentoring for local artists.
