Matthias Koch: Extraordinary Photographs of Dover Presented By DAD

Matthias Koch

“In my series “Places of History” I am concerned with the overlap of two layers of time. Looking at the situation of the sites today, one can hardly sense what happened at these places in the past”.

Dover Arts Development is delighted to present Matthias Koch’s extraordinary photographs of Dover and its surroundings. Included in the programme for the Deal Festival 2013, this new body of work by Matthias Koch will be viewable as a slide show before, after and between two concerts celebrating the relationship between Britten and Shostakovich. Koch spent 3 weeks in Dover as part of Dover Arts Development’s War & Peace project in October 2012, photographing in and around Dover from the top of his 1975 Mercedes fire engine ladder. He is counted as one of the renowned contemporary photographers coming out of the Dusseldorf school, founded by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Koch is interested in the superimposition of multiple layers of time; in re-presenting important historical sites he re-contextualises both memory and place. His compositions are vast and impressive and within their vastness contain an intense attention to the smallest detail.

War & Peace is the major new programme from Dover Arts Development (DAD), taking place from May 2012 to December 2013. Ambitious in scope and scale, it aims to deconstruct Dover’s multi-layered history as peaceful industrial town, seaport for generations of arrivals and departures, and defensive military stronghold in times of war.  Over the life of the programme, separate but inter-related projects will engage participants and audiences in a visual, musical, poetic and intellectual reflection on place.
