Prime minister David Cameron has wasted no time in announcing the appointment of Sajid Javid MP as Culture Secretary. He is to replace Maria Miller effective immediately, following her resignation this morning, after a long and drawn out expense scandal.

Javid is the MP for Bromsgrove. An economics and politics major at Exeter University, he has a background in banking. The new minister previously held the position of financial secretary to the treasury. To show just how much of an impression Javid has made on the government, he was George Osborne's trusted right-hand man. His first ministerial appointment was as an aide, becoming economic secretary and then financial secretary to the Treasury. Javid has worked at US bank Chase Manhattan, where he was the youngest vice-president, at 25. He later worked at Deutsche Bank. He is said to have a personal wealth of £20m, so no need to fiddle expenses here.

He is a specialist in helping to raise investment in developing countries and is considered a global leader in this field. He has been engaged in community work his entire adult life, including raising £710,000 in a single event for the Disasters Emergency Committee and leading a charity expedition to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro for Help the Aged.

His job will be filled by Nicky Morgan MP, who has also been appointed minister for women, a post held by Miller. Cameron stated that he hopes Ms Miller will be able to rejoin the cabinet ‘in due course’. The DCMS budget is set to be boosted to £1.2bn for the new financial year.

Javid is not someone you could describe as possessing a direct connection to the arts. The most noticeable wall decoration in his office is a portrait of Margaret Thatcher, who he claims to have been a fan of since since he was 11. I think this says it all!
