MIMA Secures Two Major Funding Awards

The Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art  has been awarded a potential £120,000 from Arts Councilnon. The Catalyst funding, awarded over three years, will support the organisation and mima staff through the gallery’s move to become a charitable trust. Part of this will be relaunching mimafriends with new branding, website and benefits package. It will  include a special Teesside University offer to students, local families and creative people as well as a patrons package for the first time. There is potential for mima to have allocations of up to £40,000 of match funding in years two and three, if it can attract donations of £40,000 and £60,000 respectively.

Alison Clark-Jenkins, Regional Director Arts Council England, said: “I am very pleased to see mima has secured funding from the Catalyst scheme. mima has contributed a great deal to the cultural ecology of the Tees Valley area in the five years since it opened – from championing local talent to hosting exhibitions from world-class artists. The funds will help mima to develop innovative ways to increase arts giving and philanthropy in a region where large private donors are scarce compared to other places.” Mima’s award for funding through ‘Start’ partners cultural venues with non-visiting schools within deprived areas, encouraging relationships, visits, enjoyment and excitement. The funding will enable the gallery to build on and diversify its successful schools programmes.

Throughout the 2012/13 academic year, mima will be working with 10 Middlesbrough primary schools located within five miles of the gallery. 20 Middlesbrough teachers will take part in professional development opportunities, that will encourage and foster familiarity and confidence in the gallery. 600 children will visit the gallery to take part in hands-on making, creating, drawing and talking workshops, inspired by the exhibitions, collection and architecture at mima. Schools taking part include Archibald Primary, Easterside Primary and Newport Primary. The project will culminate in a public celebration day at mima inviting all participants back to take part in weekend activities and making sessions.

Mima Director Kate Brindley said:- “We are absolutely thrilled with the success of these two bids. These new funds will help to strengthen the gallery’s community reach, as well as helping to shape mima into a resilient gallery for the future, supporting its transition to trust at what is a pivotal moment in the gallery’s life.”
