Early, Modern, and Contemporary Works on Paper will be offered for sale by leading dealers presenting old and new works, integrated in one space when The Watercolours + Works on Paper Fair returns for 4 days to the Science Museum, South Kensington, London SW7, from Thursday 31 January – Sunday 3 February 2013.
Visitors can view and buy from a range of Early, Modern and Contemporary art dealers and see Museum quality art presented in four interconnected galleries on one floor, this time on Level One. Prices start at a manageable level: £200 – £500 for mounted drawings, the majority of works are priced between £500 to £10,000, and then the exceptional items at £10,000 plus.
The defining elements of this Fair are: All the art for sale is a work on paper, whether it is a print, drawing, watercolour, poster or photograph. The art has been created by artists from the early 17th Century right up to the present day. The work is original, of high quality, and vetted by experts. References and themes in art can be identified and tracked.
The Fair is supported by an extensive programme of events. Visitors can sign up for free talks by the experts at 3 pm each day and find out more about the pictures for sale. They can gain an insight into the vetting process where all the works are examined by experts who assess them for quality, value and authenticity. Ask for a specialised guided tour to see the highlights of the Fair. Meet friends in the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Bar or Café on the first floor within the Fair. Listen to free live music by classical and jazz musicians during the later evenings on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
The Fair is supporting The National Open Art Competition, who will present 10 of their prize winning contemporary art- ists’ works on paper. “We are working together to highlight the best of contemporary art” Neil Lawson Baker, Chairman of NOAC. New this year, visitors can try their hand at printmaking led by the City & Guilds of London Art School Printmakers, who are partners with the Fair for their second year, building on the success of the 2012 Artist in Residence programme.
This years loan exhibition is titled “The Conquest of the Skies”. It includes a selection of little known original works focusing on the fascination of ballooning, chosen from the Science Museum Art Collection and jointly curated by Harry Moore-Gwyn, specialist in Modern British pictures and Boris Jardine, Curator of History of Science at the Science Museum. This is a rare chance to see these works by artists such as Rowlandson, Gillray, Seppings-Wright and Tissandier, as they have been retrieved from the archives, con- served and framed and will be on show for 4 days only. The majority of the work has never been seen in public before. Tracing the history of the great pioneers in the development of ballooning, the show will include contemporary and near contemporary images of their first ascents, including rare early records of those undertaken by the Montgolfier Brothers in France in the 1780s and Vincenzo Lunardi, James Sadler and James Glaisher in late eighteenth and early – to mid-nineteenth century England.The significant place that ballooning occupied in the popular imagination is demonstrated by a series of engaging British political caricatures that use ballooning as their subject, including two well-known engravings by James Gillray from the early 1800s and another by John Doyle from the 1830s.
