New Haunch for London – Paris Launch for Gagosian

Two leading figures in the art world are launching new gallery spaces next month. Both will be opulent palaces for the purpose of flogging mega art to the mega rich. Gagosian’s new space located on the right bank will open with shows by American painter Cy Twombly, 82 who lives and works in Lexington, Virgina. The five new paintings represent approximately five years of work. Twombly is famous for his laborious infrequent output. The other exhibition will be by the French Architect, Jean Prouvé, a name synonymous with post-war architecture and furniture design. This will be Gagosian’s ninth gallery. The four-storey, 900-square-meter gallery, situated on the Rue de Ponthieu just behind Christie’s, is designed by Paris based architect Jean-François Bodin in collaboration with London architectural firm Caruso St John which is also responsible for Gagosian’s London and Rome premises.

Here in London the former founders of The Haunch of Venison, which sold out to Christies in 2007, open a new venture. Harry Blain and Graham Southern have aptly named the gallery, BlainSouthern, it opens in October in time for Frieze with a show by Mat Collishaw. BlainSouthern will also open a second townhouse space near Bond Street later this year, both sites are temporary and it has been reported that the gallery will eventually move to a large new Mayfair space in 2012.
