Non-conformity Gender and Queer Identities Explored At MOCA London

Non-conformity

A brilliant new exhibition of photographs explores representations of non-conformity gender and queer identities at MOCA London. This will be the first show at the space in a year, following renovations.

The exhibition invites the viewer to reflect on gender, self and otherness through the acts of looking, and being looked at. Through the study of gaze, gesture and texture, Looking Out, Looking In seeks to emphasize the physical and formal elements of a photographic portrait. The perfections and flaws of pose, skin, clothing and backdrop become central elements in these dialogues between sitter/artist and sitter/viewer. Looking Out, Looking In was shot in London in 2015 and is still ongoing.

Åsa Johannesson is a London based fine artist. Johannesson studied photography at the Royal College of Art, where she graduated in 2009. Her work has shown in London as well as internationally, most recently at the Vaxjo Konsthall, Sweden (The White Gaze, 2015). Currently Johannesson is completing a practice based PhD at London College of Communication/University of the Arts. Research title: Beyond the Queer Gaze: Representation and the Viewer in Queer Photography.
