Panel Discussion To Coincide With Helen Frankenthaler and JMW Turner Exhibition

Making Painting: Helen Frankenthaler and JMW Turner at Turner Contemporary, Margate, will include a panel discussion to mark the opening of the exhibition. Experts will explain Frankenthaler’s life and painting process. John Elderfield, Clifford Ross, Elizabeth Smith, and “Making Painting” curator James Hamilton will join writer, broadcaster and art historian Tim Marlow.

John Elderfield, a Consultant at Gagosian Gallery, is Chief Curator Emeritus of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, where he directed numerous celebrated exhibitions, among them “Kurt Schwitters,” “Henri Matisse: A Retrospective,” and “De Kooning: A Retrospective,” and the more specialized “Manet and the Execution of Maximilian,” and “Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913-1917.” He is the recipient of Harkness and John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships, and of the first Mitchell Prize for an outstanding publication on twentieth century art.

James Hamilton, curator of “Making Painting: Helen Frankenthaler and JMW Turner,” has organized dozens of exhibitions since the 1970s. He has authored many books on nineteenth and twentieth century art, including “London Lights: The Minds that Moved the City that Shook the World 1805-51” and “Turner: A Life.”

Tim Marlow has been Director of Exhibitions at White Cube since 2003. He is also an award-winning radio and television broadcaster; his most recent series, Tim Marlow on…, has been broadcast on Sky Arts and BBC World.

Clifford Ross’s photography has been collected and exhibited by institutions worldwide. Exhibitions of his Hurricane and Mountain series are scheduled for 2014 at Zhejiang Art Museum, Hangzhou, China, and for 2015 at MASS MoCA, North Adams, Massachusetts. Ross is Chairman of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, New York.

Elizabeth Smith is Executive Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, New York. She is former Executive Director of Curatorial Affairs at the Art Gallery of Ontario and former Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Programs at Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, where she organized the groundbreaking exhibitions “At the End of the Century: 100 Years of Architecture,” “Jenny Holzer: PROTECT PROTECT,” and “Lee Bontecou: A Retrospective.”

“Making Painting: Helen Frankenthaler and JMW Turner” will be on view at Turner Contemporary from January 25-May 11, 2014.
