PayneShurvell are launching a new gallery space in Blandford Street with the sweeping landscapes of Louise Cattrell. The works are concerned with the idea of ‘Landscape’ as an ideal. Since completing her artistic studies in London and Dundee, Cattrell has travelled widely, taking up residencies which have fed into her work.

Cattrell visualises landscape as a place of imagination and fantasy, tempered by her direct personal experience. Thus her travels abroad have informed her paintings, forming a context. Within this framework, Cattrell explores the changes that occur depending upon the time of day, season, and even the year. These works therefore place a direct emphasis upon experience, with variations of space from panorama to close-up focus also an important aspect.

Cattrell’s paintings, consciously or unconsciously, echo the spirit of Romanticism, with her personal attachment to the subject of primary importance. The indistinct swathes of colour, combined with ambiguous titles create eerie and obscure narratives, which allow Cattrell’s personal responses to landscape to resonate in the remote viewer.

Louise Cattrell (b. Glasgow) has an MA, Fine Art from the Royal College of Art, London. She has had solo exhibitions at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh, and in Birmingham, Sheffield and Berwick upon Tweed.  Her work is in the collections of the Scottish Arts Council;  Gracefield, Dumfries;  Phoenix Assurance Company, Tel Aviv;  Coopers & Lybrand,  Deloitte,  and Reuters, London and the Ministry of Defence, Whitehall, London.
