Pete Doherty Sculpture Finally Unveiled At Stations Of The Cross Exhibition

Pete Doherty Sculpture

Artlyst was at the opening of the exhibition ‘Stations Of The Cross’ in Marylebone Parish Church, the historic 200 year old church designed by Thomas Hardwick, featuring the work of 20 London based artists depicting the Passion of Christ. It is the second ‘Stations Of The Cross’ exhibition curated by Ben Moore in support of the Missing Tom Fund, and features a life-sized marble sculpture of the former Libertines frontman Pete Doherty on the cross, by artist Nick Reynolds.

The sculpture titled ‘For Pete’s Sake’ will go on sale for £33,000 and was originally made in 2008 as a collaboration between Pete Doherty and his artist friend Nick Reynolds, assisted by Schoony who specialises in life casts. This is the first time the sculpture has been seen in public and it appears suspended in the middle of the historic 200-year-old church alongside other works depicting the Passion of Christ by artists including Paul Benney, Nasser Azam, Angelica Cayzer, Wolfe Lenkiewicz and Charlie Mackesy.

Reynolds says the inspiration for the work came from Doherty’s treatment by the media “When I created this work I saw Pete being crucified by the media and that provided the basis of my inspiration to make this piece.”

For Pete’s Sake is part of a show called Stations of the Cross, which sees a range of art work depicting the journey of Jesus carrying the cross on his way to crucifixion. It is part of Art Below’s exhibition, which features depictions of Christ to coincide with Lent in the run up to Easter. Selected works from the show will be showcased by Art Below, across billboard space on the London Underground in stations that have a symbolic link to the theme, including King’s Cross, Charing Cross, Temple, St.Paul’s, Angel and Marylebone.

The Revd Canon Stephen Evans of St.Marylebone Chruch added, “Doherty’s battle with addiction and a self-destructive lifestyle have been well catalogued in the press throughout his career; today, having successfully completed rehab treatment in Thailand, Doherty seeks to live a new life free of the things which had nearly destroyed him.”

Curator Ben Moore, concluded: “People like Pete Doherty are confident and have Christ-like attributes. Christ was a young man with a following who was revolutionary in spirit and frowned on by the authorities.”

Artists: NASSER AZAM, PAUL BENNEY, CHARLOTTE BROMLEY- DAVENPORT, RYAN CALLAHAN, RICARDO CINALLI, CHRIS CLACK, ANGELICA CAYZER, MARGUERITE HORNER, WOLFE LENKIEWICZ, CHARLIE MACKESY, ROBIN MASON, ROBERT PRISEMAN, NICK REYNOLDS, COSMO SARSON, TRISTAN SCHOONRAAD, BRAN SYMONDSON, MARK URWIN, ROBI WALTERS
