London’s Photographers Gallery board of trustees have elected Scott Mead as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees. His appointment took effect on 1 November 2013. He succeeded Sir Brian Pomeroy CBE who has been Chairman since 2007.

Scott Mead is a fine art photographer, philanthropist and investor. He was a partner and managing director of Goldman Sachs until 2003, a senior advisor at Apax Partners and a founding partner of Richmond Park Partners.   Scott is founder and chairman of the Mead Family Foundation which supports organisations in arts, education and healthcare. Among his many board, trustee and advisory roles are the Executive Committee of the Tate Foundation, University of the Arts, and the International Center of Photography (New York). Scott was formerly a non-executive director of Great Ormond Street Hospital and vice chairman of its redevelopment appeal board.  He is a graduate of Harvard College, Emmanuel College at Cambridge University where he was the Harvard Scholar and the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Scott studied photography under renowned photographers William Eggleston and Emmet Gowin in the 1970s.  In 2009 he rediscovered his photographic archives and was inspired to return to photography, holding a solo show at Hamiltons Gallery, London in 2010.  His work has been exhibited and collected worldwide as well as being selected for the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Scott Mead’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Gallery following its £9.2 million capital campaign and the launch of its new home for British and international photography in May of last year. The Photographers’ Gallery was the UK’s first gallery devoted to photography and as a public institution has been instrumental in the championing and establishment of many key names in photography. The Gallery sits at the heart of London’s Soho area where it has been located since its foundation in 1971.

Brett Rogers, Director, The Photographers’ Gallery said: The Board and I are delighted that Scott is joining us as Chairman at this crucial time in our development. Having succeeded in establishing a new gallery space in the heart of Soho, we are looking forward to working with him to further enhance the Gallery’s profile nationally and internationally. Scott brings a wealth of business skills and as a practising photographer, a deep understanding and passion for photography. The Gallery remains indebted to Sir Brian Pomeroy for the energy, commitment and support which he has provided over the past six years.

Scott Mead said: I am honoured and delighted to succeed Sir Brian Pomeroy as Chairman and look forward to working with the trustees and with Brett Rogers and her team in taking the Gallery to the next stages in its exciting journey.  Photography is at an important crossroads in its development as an artistic form as technology opens many new areas for creative exploration. I hope to help the Gallery to be at the centre of these developments and provide leadership and opportunities for both emerging and established photographers.
