PINTA London – Europe’s only art fair dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art will return to Earls Court From 4 to 7 June, for its fourth edition, offering visitors the chance to view and purchase work by eminent artists from South America, Spain and Portugal. Over 60 leading galleries from across Europe and the Americas will go on show in this years event. This is the largest number of galleries in the show’s four year history.
Highlights will include: Galeria Graça Brandao and Galeria Filomena Soares from Portugal, who will be showing works by influential Brazilian artist Lygia Pape and experimental Portuguese artist Helena Almeida, respectively Ivorypress from Madrid – led by Elena Ochoa Foster – will be exhibiting for the first time at an international art fair outside of their home city, bringing artists including abstract painter Juan Uslé and young Cuban collective, Los Carpinteros
Amongst others, Galería Nieves Fernández presenting Jordi Alcaraz and Espacio Mínimo showcasing works by Juan Luis Moraza, will reinforce the increasing Spanish presence at PINTA London
Notable galleries from Brazil include Baró Gallery in Sao Paulo, who will show groundbreaking performance artist, Felipe Ehrenberg and Galeria Murilo Castro from Belo Horizonte, presenting master engraver, Arthur Luiz Piza Additional South American galleries include Emma Molina from Mexico and Nueveochenta Arte Contemporáneo from Colombia. For the first time, the Dominican Republic will be exhibiting at the show thanks to Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery from Santo Domingo The USA will be represented by Henrique Faría Fine Art from New York and Durban Segnini, from Miami amongst others
London galleries will comprise Max Wigram, presenting Brazilian artist Luiz Zerbini and Marlborough Contemporary with Portuguese artist João Onofre
In addition to an exceptional range of galleries, PINTA Projects – curated by collector and patron, Catherine Petitgas, and Brazilian curator, Kiki Mazzucchelli – will present a focus on young Latin American artists living and working in Europe. Names will include Peruvian artist Armando Andrade, represented by Carl Freedman Gallery and Brazilian artists Tonico Lemos and Rodrigo Matheus, with Stephen Friedman Gallery and Fortes Vilaça respectively.
Excitingly for 2013, PINTA London will present the first edition of ART Numérique – an innovative exhibition of works focused on technology and curated by Rolando J Carmona, which will recognise a unique genre of art that has been developing in Latin America for the last 50 years. To represent this theme, three artists whose practice reflects on the internet have been selected, including: Argentine conceptual artist Marta Minujin, Venezuelan artist, poet and computer programmer Yucef Merhi and the Venezuelan artist Santiago Torres.
A regular feature at the show, PINTA Solo Shows, will this year celebrate the work of two influential painters: Cesar Paternosto, a leader in Latin American Geometric Abstraction and Luis Tomasello, master of kinetic art. Further highlights will include the return of PINTA Design, showing cutting edge design pieces from Latin America, curated by Manuel Díaz Cebrian, and for the first year, the Saatchi Gallery will be running the Saatchi Store: a pop up shop on site at the fair.
To complement the fair, the PINTA Auditorium Programme will focus on the rapidly growing Latin American presence in London. As part of a series titled Focus Latin America, London-based institutions will offer an insight into forthcoming exhibitions that are set to ensure that Latin American artists are a permanent fixture on the UK art scene. Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Iwona Blazwick and Polly Staple will preview the Serpentine Gallery’s retrospective of emerging Argentine artist Adrian Villar Rojas, Whitechapel Gallery’s Latin America Art in Britain and Chisenhale Gallery’s homage to Mexican artist Mariana Castillo Deball respectively, whilst curators Lydia Yee from the Barbican, Tanya Barson from Tate Modern, Adrian Locke of the Royal Academy of Arts and Luiza Teixera de Freitas from the Freud Museum will discuss internationally renowned Leandro Erlich, Latin America’s most prolific post-war artist – Mira Schendel, Mexico: A Revolution in Art, 1910-1940 and Apestraction – a solo exhibition of works by Mexican artist Damian Ortega.
