Revealed: National Art Collection On View At Belfast’s Ulster Museum

A collection of 160 paintings and sculptures tracing an artistic lineage from the 16th century (portrait of Queen Elizabeth I ) to the present (martin Creed see photo) is on display  from this weekend and will remain open to the public until June 9, at The Ulster Museum. LS Lowry’s modern masterpiece, Lancashire Fair: Good Friday, Daisy Nook, recently exhibited at 10 Downing Street is part of the exhibition along with other key works of art.

The pieces in this exhibition are usually displayed in British government buildings around the world, raising the profile of the art and artists and contributing to cultural diplomacy. Artists from the 1500s to the present day are featured in the exhibition, which includes portraits of Lord Byron, Queen Elizabeth I and Richard III, along with works by Vanessa Bell, Zarina Bhimji, Tracey Emin, Martin Creed, Howard Hodgkin, Richard Long, Grayson Perry, Bridget Riley, Walter Sickert and Andy Warhol. The exhibition is divided into five sections:

This is the first stop in a three leg tour as part of the Belfast UK city of culture celebrations. Last June the museum welcomed almost 74,000 visitors, – the highest monthly footfall since refurbishment.  The increase in visitors. “This exhibition will offer visitors to Ulster Museum the chance to see the extraordinary breadth of works of art that normally hang in UK embassies, high commissions and other official residences and buildings around the world.”
