Sterling Hundley a talented designer nominated for his series of illustrations for classic novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (commissioned by The Folio Society) has won the V&A Illustration Awards 2015. The judging panel particularly praised Hundley’s work which carefully echoes NC Wyeth’s 1911 illustrations for the same novel. Hundley approached the project by creating traditional, large scale oil paintings, he then combined these with drawings using Photoshop to create contemporary illustrations for the novel.

The American born artist studied Fine Art in Communication Art and Design in Virginia and his clients have included the New York Times, GQ, Rolling Stone, Penguin Group (USA), Harper Collins and Random House. Hundley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and has achieved gold and silver medals from the American Museum of Illustration, Society of Illustrators and the Illustrators Club of Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia.

The annual V&A Illustration Awards celebrate the best illustrations published over the previous year. The judging panel for 2015 comprised Editor of Artists and Illustrators, Steve Pill; Retail Consultant and Broadcaster, Mary Portas; and the late Director of Capital Programmes at the Royal Collection, Moira Gemmill. The judges praised Hundley, describing his work as ‘richly coloured, atmospheric and stylistically consistent’, ‘appropriately sinister’ and ‘bold, brave and powerful’.

Of the 14 shortlisted illustrators, the winners of the four individual categories are as follows:

Book Illustration Award and Overall Winner

Sterling Hundley for Treasure Island (The Folio Society) Editorial Illustration Award

Simon Pemberton for The Blackest Isles (FT Weekend Magazine) Book Cover Illustration Award

The V&A Illustration Awards were established in 1972 and previous winners include Raymond Briggs, Ralph Steadman, Posy Simmonds and Michael Foreman.
