Super Collider Take Over Kings Cross Filling Station

Super /Collider will  be curating a weekend of science-leaning and Art at the King’s Cross Filling Station, a stunning new public space and pop-up restaurant on the Regent’s Canal. It was designed by the architects Carmody Groarke and created as a temporary space for 2012. Behind a series of undulating panels, the existing kiosk has been being transformed into ‘Shrimpy’s’ while the former forecourt hosts a bar, pizza oven and lecture theatre which will play host to a series of talks, installations, screenings and live demonstrations centered around the future of the humble filling station in a post-petroleum future. Where will our energy come from, what will power our vehicles and what will we use these urban spaces for in years to come?

Super/Collider are a pop science collective founded by Chris Hatherill (former fashion, music and tech journalist for Dazed & Confused and Vice). They started by using their contacts and skills in the arts to find new ways of talking about science. They operate from their East London base and set up events such as weekly science nights with a host of creatives and DJ’s or star gazing on the roof of Shoreditch House.
founded in 2006, it is a not-for-profit collective devoted to exploring & promoting science through the creative industries.

In the past they have created and commissioned art exhibitions, installations, expeditions and other special projects like ISLAND/UNIVERSE, the Handcrafted Particle Accelerator and Worlds in Transit. S C regularly run events nights like Science Fair™ at The Book Club plus one-offs and parties around events like the summer solstice and  create books like DesigningScience and All About, plus content for outlets including Dazed&Confused, AnOther, Stylus.com and Vice.

The Vauxhall Ampera x Super/Collider Science Weekend at the new Filling Station in Kings Cross uses this cultural space on the site of a former BP Petrol station in a new and inovative way. Inspired by the launch of the Vauxhall Ampera, the  new extended range electric vehicle, the Weekend will be based around four pioneering installations by designer Patrick Stevenson-Keating accompanied by three days of experimentation and events.

Visitors can also expect to see hydrogen fuel cell racing, personal rapid transport pod demo, catalytic clothing (which cleans the air around you) and nightly laser fusion light shows – guests can also treat themselves to Homeslice pizza, proseco on tap and slushy margheritas at the Filling Station bar!

The installation will be on show throughout the weekend, Patrick Stevenson-Keating’s Future Filling Station installation takes its cue from KXFS’ history as a working petrol station and asks ‘what will power the fuel pumps of tomorrow?’using the former forecourt as a fitting backdrop, the installation comprises four futuristic fuel pumps which use far-out but hopefully not far off energy sources which could power tomorrow’s vehicles.

The events start 17th – 19th August 2012
