Charles Saatchi the gallerist, art collector and ad man responsible for electing Margaret Thatcher to power is filing for divorce from the TV chef Nigella Lawson. This follows the publication of photographs which showed him choking her at a posh London restaurant in June. The 70 year old, was given a police caution for the assault. The couple have been separated since the photos were published.

Mr Saatchi said it was a difficult and  "heartbreaking" decision for him and added that the couple had "become estranged and drifted apart" over the past year. "I am sorry to announce that Nigella Lawson and I are getting divorced," he told the Mail. "I feel that I have clearly been a disappointment to Nigella during the last year or so, and I am disappointed that she was advised to make no public comment to explain that I abhor violence of any kind against women. " I have never abused her physically in any way." "I am sorry that we had a row. I am sorry she was upset. I am even more sorry that this is the end of our marriage," he stated.

As mentioned, Ms Lawson has made no comment since the incident. Charles Saatchi and Nigella have been married since 2003. She has two children, Cosima and Bruno, from her marriage to journalist John Diamond, who died in 2001.

The divorce comes as no surprise as this very public display has reaped havoc on both of their careers. The former Chancellor of the Exchequer's daughter is thought to be returning to the US early for the filming of her latest American cookery series.
