Tate Gallery Purchases Faux Hotel Signs Through WME | IMG Frieze Fund

WME | IMG Frieze Fund

It is always a highpoint of the Frieze Art Fair when the annual Tate purchase is revealed. This year, £150,000 has been made available for the Fund, supported for the first time by WME | IMG. The Fund enables Tate to acquire works by emerging and leading international artists at the Fair. To date, more than 100 works have been acquired, many of which are currently on show in the inaugural display in the new Tate Modern.

The selection panel includes two guest curators: Jarosław Suchan, Director, Muzeum Sztuki, Lodz; and María Inés Rodríguez, Director, CAPC  (Contemporary Art Museum), Bordeaux; working with four Tate curators: Clara Kim, The Daskalopoulos Senior Curator, International Art (Africa, Asia & Middle East); Clarrie Wallis, Senior Curator of Contemporary British Art; Hannah Johnston, Assistant Curator, International Art; and Elsa Coustou, Assistant Curator, Contemporary British Art.

“We would like to thank both WME | IMG and Frieze for their support for the Fund this year”. – Nicholas Serota

Nicholas Serota, Director of Tate, said: “We would like to thank both WME | IMG and Frieze for their support for the Fund this year. In making the selections of artworks we have been able to acquire, we are particularly grateful to the galleries and the artists who have been so generous in helping to make it possible for works of this calibre to enter a public collection. As is often reflected in the selections of work acquired by the Fund, Tate also benefits enormously from the advice and input provided by our international collaborators, thereby helping Tate to broaden its frame of reference.”

Victoria Siddall, Director, Frieze Fairs said: “It is very meaningful for galleries and artists when works are purchased by Tate for the national collection, so I am thrilled that the Frieze Tate Fund returns this year, thanks to WME | IMG. The Fund launched in 2003 and was the first museum acquisition fund connected to an art fair. We were particularly proud to see 12 works that have been purchased by the Fund in the new hang at Tate, including Roman Ondák’s Good Feelings in Good Times 2003. I look forward to discovering the works selected by Tate this year.”

The following works have been acquired as gifts to the Tate collection thanks to the 2016 Frieze Tate Fund to benefit the Tate collection:
