The Tate has passed 100,000 Members for the first time making its membership scheme is the largest of all Europe’s galleries and arts venues. Tate Members was founded in 1958 to support the Gallery. Since its inception, Members have contributed to the acquisition of over 400 works for the national Collection. This includes iconic works such as: Henri Matisse’s The Snail 1953; Pablo Picasso’s Weeping Woman 1937; and Cy Twombly’s Quattro Stagioni1993-1994. This year, Tate Members will contribute over £6million to Tate from subscription income of which £1.5million will be used to purchase works of art.

Nicholas Serota, Director Tate said: “100,000 is a milestone in extending Tate's reach into the wider community. Tate's relationship with Members lies at the heart of our activities. Their support and their enthusiasm for the visual arts encourages us to strengthen the Collection and develop the programme in exciting directions'.”

Jon Snow, Chair of Tate Members Council said: "This has been a monumental year for Tate Members. And with this most recent growth comes an even greater challenge to connect in a meaningful way with each and every Member. The building plans at TateBritain and Tate Modern will give us the opportunity to improve our offer to Members and further reward them for their support and loyalty. It is a brilliant time to be a Tate Member."

In return for an annual subscription fee of £60-£120, Members can visit all Tate exhibitions as many times as they wish. They are also sent monthly ebulletins, a bi-monthly guide and TATE ETC. magazine. At Tate Britain, a spectacular new Members Room occupying the upper level of the rotunda will be unveiled in autumn 2013 as part of the redevelopment. The new extension at Tate Modern will be also provide new facilities for Members in addition to the existing popular Members Room.

In 2008 Tate Members contributed £1m to the capital project for Tate Modern. In 2012, Members matched that donation, contributing a further £1m to the Tate Britain capital project.Tate Members is governed by Tate Members Council who are Trustees under Charity law and Directors under Company law. Jon Snow chairs the Council of fifteen individuals who include Shami Chakrabarti, Miranda Sawyer and artists Ryan Gander and Hannah Collins.
