The Armory Show 2013: Gallery Lineup Previewed Here

The Armory Show, is one of the worlds leading international contemporary and modern art fairs. It takes place every March on Piers 92 & 94 in central Manhattan. The fair is devoted to showcasing important artworks from the 20th and 21st centuries. Now In its fifteen years the fair has become a global institution, combining a selection of the world’s leading galleries with an exceptional program of arts events and exhibitions, throughout New York during the celebrated Armory Arts Week.

The Armory Show was named after the infamous Show held in the Armory building in 1913, which brought modernism to America and included Picasso, Matisse and Duchamp in their first public showing in New York. The fair now housed in Piers 92 and 94 along the Hudson River on Manhattan’s west side, is the largest art fair in New York and one of the principal annual art events in the international art market calendar.

Visited by up to 60,000 thousand people each March, the Armory has for almost two decades been the showpiece for some of the world’s most important modern and contemporary art galleries. Canonical names from Miro to Rothko have all been presented at the fair, as have, in equal measure, some of the most cutting edge artists of a younger generation like Hirst, Ai Weiwei and Ryan Gander. Organised by The Armory Show, Armory Arts Week has emerged as one of liveliest moments in New York’s already rich cultural calendar, with a number of smaller art fairs temporarily alighting throughout the city and the major museums staging their marquee exhibitions to coincide with the fair.

This unique section of the fair has quickly become one of the defining features of The Armory Show, presenting a survey of a region’s contemporary cultural practices as framed by a singular curatorial vision.  Armory Focus booths are located in a dedicated section adjacent to the entrance of Pier 94 and associated projects will be presented throughout the fair. Talks and lectures will also be organized around topics pertinent to Armory Focus: USA as part of The Armory Show’s popular Open programme.

Liz Magic Laser, acclaimed for her dynamic performance work has been named the Armory Artist Commission, and Eric Shiner, Director of the Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh will provide the curatorial vision for Armory Focus: USA, spotlighting the best of contemporary practice in America.
