The Horrors Of Hiroshima - Art Show Goes On Display

Artworks by survivors of the 1945 atomic bomb in Hiroshima are to be displayed outside Japan for the very first time, in an exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery to begin next month.

The pictures depict The powerful and disturbing paintings feature scenes depicted from 6 August 1945, when Hiroshima was the first Japanese city to experience the horror of the atomic bomb - Nagasaki would follow on 9 August of that fateful year. resulting in over 150,000 deaths; including many who died of the long-term effects of radiation sickness.

Twelve paintings and drawings were created by the so-called 'hibakusha'; this translates as 'bomb-exposed people', will be included in The Sensory War 1914-2014 exhibition in Manchester. The images were created after a request by NHK which was a Japanese broadcaster in the 1970s - and would later tour the country. This will be the first time that the painting have been exhibited outside of Japan.

The exhibition runs from 11 October to 22 February 2015.
