The Mayor’s Thames Festival undergoes an exciting transformation this year, taking place over 10 days instead of the usual weekend of activities. From 6 to 15 September 2013, the festival will encourage Londoners and visitors to connect directly with the river in new and surprising ways through an extravaganza of public art commissions, music, river-based events and initiatives to get people into boats and back onto the waters of London’s iconic river. With the principal focus being between Lambeth Bridge and St Katharine Docks, activities will also take place this year from the source of the Thames down to its mouth. Leading artists include Richard Wilson RA (UK), twice nominated for the Turner Prize, Layla Curtis (UK), Zatorski + Zatorski (UK), Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen (Denmark), Hew Locke (UK) and Doug Fishbone (USA).

Highlights include:

-        a magnificent, day-long, water-borne ships’ opera for the Thames culminating in a dazzling sound and light spectacular at Tower Bridge

-        large-scale artworks on boards along the riverside walkways

-        a film celebrating the people who live and work on the river shown on an outdoor riverside screen

-        a special exhibition of more than 50 works of art  inspired by the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant

-        the river’s longest boat race

-        the world’s slowest river race

-        riverside choral performances by children and adults

1513: A Ships’ Opera is a spectacular, specially composed performance for the Thames by

Richard Wilson RA, twice nominated for the Turner Prize, and Cultureship directors and artists, Zatorski + Zatorski. Historic vessels are modified to become marvellous musical instruments and sculptural pieces in themselves, resurrecting the lost sounds of the river with steam whistles, bells, horns hooters, sirens and canon. The day-long performance starts at sea near the mouth of the Thames Estuary, when a lone ship makes its way upriver to join the other mustered vessels at Trinity Buoy Wharf, home of London's last lighthouse. The fleet will then go on to present a dazzling finale of sound, light and steam at Tower Bridge later that night. The vessels will bring back the historic sounds of the Thames as they perform a live, moving, operatic concerto against the stunning backdrop of one of the world’s most famous bridges. The ships’ opera will be conducted, by semaphore, from the top of the Trinity Lightship, a lighthouse on top of a ship. Some of the musicians taking part have worked with Bjork, Oasis, and The Pogues. A Cultureship project commissioned by the Thames Festival Trust.
