Tracey Emin Wins South Bank Arts Outstanding Achievement Award

Tracey Emin was presented today with the South Bank Sky Arts Award for outstanding achievement, in a ceremony hosted by Lord Melvin Bragg. The Artist was given her award by the comedian/presenter Frank Skinner, in a roomful of celebrities, at the Dorchester Hotel. Crime drama Broadchurch and rock group Arctic Monkeys were the big winners at this year’s awards event. The 2014 South Bank Awards’ trophy was designed by the Pop Art guru Sir Peter Blake, who also created the album sleeve for The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

“I think at the moment there is no money, and always in that situation arts and culture are the first to be cut. but if you look at the cuts that have been made they’re actually smaller than they have been in the last 15 years. I think the government should take note of events like today and reinstall some kind of financial backing. I do what I do. All the people here have never stopped working because of cuts or whatever, but I think the more support culture and art have in the UK the better”, Ms Emin stated, after the ceremony.

The South Bank Show Arts Awards are amongst the world’s most coveted arts awards, celebrating the best of British culture and achievement across visual art, theatre, opera, dance, comedy, classical music, pop, TV drama, literature and film. Winners in other categories of this year’s awards included the James Bond film Skyfall and Hilary Mantel’s novel Bring Up the Bodies.
