Tino Sehgal has won the Golden Lion for best artist at Venice Biennale. The British-born artist was awarded the prize for his performance piece in which people  move on the floor humming and beatboxing. Seghal, was recently chosen as the Unilever commission for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, last summer during the Cultural Olympiad. The project had performers telling intimate stories to visitors in a form of art as spoken word.

Sehgal has been nominated for this year's Turner Prize For his pioneering projects This Variation at documenta (XIII) and These Associations at Tate Modern. Both structured and improvised, Seghal’s intimate works consist purely of live encounters between people and demonstrate a keen sensitivity to their institutional context. Through participatory means, they test the limits of artistic material and audience perception in a new and significant way.

He received his Golden Lion award in the Encyclopedic Palace show in the central pavilion of the 55th international art biennale, the jury praised Sehgal "for the excellence and innovation that his practice has brought opening the field of artistic disciplines".
