Online art fair exhibitors unveiled for next February’s event
Last January VIP (view in private), the first online art fair featuring top international dealers, artists and prime location galleries, launched in New York with a gala (physical) opening. The fair was the first of its kind and an overall success with sales results reported in the millions. There were a few technical glitches with overloaded servers and the type of crashes only experienced when trying to buy Lady Gaga tickets online. The overall response to VIP was positive and the launch of this ambitious concept a hit. Now VIP2.0, as they are calling the second outing, will be “live” between February 3-8. It is going to be a make it or break it year for this expensive experiment which challenges our perceptions of how contemporary art is traded in the 21st century. If it clicks dealers will save the time and money involved in mounting yet another grueling art fair where valuable works of art are crated and shipped to major cities around the globe.
VIP still has a number of heavy weight galleries involved ,however I have noticed a few major players missing from the roster this time including ,Gagosian, Lisson and Sadie Coles who reportedly sold well last year. This may just be an oversight and these galleries will be coming on at a later stage, but politics within the upper regions of the art industry are such that we will never get a straight answer from either the galleries or the organisers.
One interesting new feature of VIP2.0 will be a virtual “Museum Edition section,” where international museums will sell editions. Apparently the Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, and Parkett magazine are already on board. All and all VIP Art Fair has been an innovative and brave initiative and we wish it all the success in 2012.
