New London Exhibition By Photographer David McCabe documents a year at The Factory

The Factory: Warhol and His Circle by David McCabe; at the Proud gallery in Chelsea is a photographic memoir shot over a year documenting the New York subculture of the 1960's. This exhibition features historically important portraits of Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick and their inner circle at the legendary Factory as it rose to prominence. It is a clear record of Warhol creating his work in this iconic inner city environment. Warhol escorted McCabe to parties where he was privy to the way he charmed the collectors into buying his work and meeting other artists such as Dali and Rauschenberg; McCabe’s wonderfully evocative photographs give us unprecedented access to Warhol and the stars of the Factory. This is David McCabe’s first UK exhibition: it is an exceptional collection presenting an unparalleled insight into the world of the New York underground.
McCabe was born in 1940 in Leicester, England, where he studied graphic design and photography. While in art school he won an international photo competition sponsored by the magazine Practical Photography and was hired by the Mayflower photo studio in London. In 1960, he moved to New York City, where he first worked as an assistant and studied under Alexey Brodovitch, Henry Wolf, and Melvin Sokolsky. He received his first assignment with Condé Nast Publications in 1963. In 1964 Andy Warhol hired him to document a year in his life; the photos were published in 2003 as A Year in the Life of Andy Warhol. McCabe's photos have been published in Life, Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, W, French Elle, French Vogue, and The Times.
