Artist Jasmina Cibic will advertise the opportunity for the public to enter a lottery to win a solo exhibition in London next January
Bus-Tops project has seen a network of 30 LED screens placed on the top of bus shelters across London to coincide with the Olympics. And now a new work by Slovenian artist Jasmina Cibic is giving ordinary Londoners the chance to win a London gallery show in London with No Experience Necessary, no questions asked.
Using the Bus-Tops screens, Slovenian artist Jasmina Cibic will advertise the opportunity for the public to enter a lottery to win a solo exhibition in London next January. Cibic will showcase codes on the LED Screens, and by gathering a minimum of 5 out of 31 passwords from the Bus-Tops screens, and then entering these into a specifically created website www.noexperiencenecessary.org, anyone can win the chance to have a solo exhibition in a new bespoke project space. Currently under construction in London’s Stoke Newington, this unusual space asks for no experience necessary with no questions asked. The lucky winner will be drawn at a public ceremony planned to take place in July 2012.
By stripping away the correlation of artistic quality and individual identity, Cibic is using the Bus-Tops screens as a tongue-in-cheek comment on the nature of the international art system. The work is also the conceptual resolution to her core artistic preoccupations; space and the position of an art work in space. Cibic extends the Bus-Tops technology beyond its lifespan as a platform for art and its role in the public space. With ‘No Experience Necessary (Win a Gallery Show in London)’ Cibic is deploying the public to complete her art work.
The Bus-Tops screens are not entirely dissimilar to the public information screens at Ljubljana’s international airport which Cibic used in her 2006 work Dictionary of Imaginary Places. Mass transport of all kinds features strongly in Cibic’s work, whether implied by the airports in which she created ‘welcoming committees’ that manifested as performances and subsequent film works or the seductive aesthetics of beautiful staged photographs shot inside disused airliners. Bus-Tops is providing a brand new platform for Cibic to create her work.
The Bus-Tops project sees nine international contemporary artists eachmaking work that will be shown continually for one month, on ten screens of their choice. Hand-selected by curator Ken Pratt, each artist brings a new element to the project’s broad basis, working across a range of media. Bus-Tops offers artists the chance to use the unique technology deployed by the project and to engage in public art.
