Yinka Shonibare Leads Yorkshire Sculpture Park's 2013 Exhibition Programme

Yorkshire Sculpture Park 2013 exhibition highlights include the first major UK survey of new and critically-acclaimed work by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare, MBE (March) Shonibare's exhibition includes FABRIC-ATION features over 30 works made between 2002 and 2013, including sculpture, film, photography and painting, many of which are shown in the UK for the first time. They include flying machines, aliens, toy paintings, food fairies, revolutionary children, spacemen and ballerinas.

Across three indoor galleries and the open air; a poignant retrospective by the late Swiss-resident sculptor Hans Josephsohn; the first installation outside London of Turner Prize-nominee Roger Hiorns’ Untitled (Seizure) (both May), the Southwark flat he transformed with blue copper sulphate crystals; and a rare UK showing by influential sculptor Garth Evans, curated by his one-time student Richard Deacon (Jan).

Further highlights include a solo exhibition by James Capper, featuring his extraordinary mechanical sculptures; the remapping of YSP as a Platonic academy by Hester Reeve; and an exhibition of film, projections and other works by acclaimed Indian artist Amar Kanwar, including his evolving research project The Sovereign Forest, recently shown at dOCUMENTA (13).

Innovation remains at the heart of our aspirations as we encourage artists to explore our 500 acres and exquisite galleries to create new and extraordinary work which attracts a large and diverse audience.”

Meanwhile, THE founder of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park has won a national award for his contribution to sculpture and art. Peter Murray CBE, founding director of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, was declared the winner of this year’s Critics’ Circle Visual Arts and Architecture award. He was chosen over artist David Hockney and Olympic cauldron designer Thomas Heatherwick for the accolade.
