YOUNG MASTERS ART PRIZE

The Exhibition & Prize Announcement at Gallery 27 for the Young Masters Prize will take place Tuesday 20th November, 6 – 9pm, at 27 Cork Street, London W1S 3NG. The Private View & Prize Giving:  Exhibition Dates: Monday 19th – Saturday 24th November 2012. This year, the 26 shortlisted artists will be presented alongside three established Guest artists; Yinka Shonibare, MBE, Ali Assaf and Lluís Barba.

The Young Masters Art Prize is a unique, not-for-profit biennial competition open to international and UK-based artists who combine skill and innovation with awareness of the Old Masters and art of the past. It aims to give global recognition to artists in the early stages of their career.

The Young Masters Art Prize 2012 Exhibition has been curated in two parts by Daisy McMullan. The Young Masters Art Prize Exhibition Part 1 which took place at Sphinx Fine Art, W8 in October 2012, saw shortlisted artists’ work hung alongside Old Masters paintings from the Sphinx Fine Art Collection. For part 2 of The Young Masters Art Prize Exhibition at Gallery 27 Cork Street, W1, the curator will present the shortlisted artists alongside three established Guest artists; Yinka Shonibare, MBE, Ali Assaf and Lluís Barba.

The awards ceremony and main exhibition will take place at the end of November at Gallery 27, 27 Cork Street, Mayfair, W1. The 2012 winner will receive £5,000 and, alongside the shortlisted artists, will have the opportunity to exhibit in special projects throughout 2013. The Artists’ Collecting Society is offering £500 for each of the two highly commended artists with advice to all the shortlisted artists on artists’ copyright and how to market their art. The three winning artists will also have the opportunity to hold some selected images at the Bridgeman Art Library.

Deciding the Winner of The Young Masters Art Prize falls to an esteemed panel of judges comprising of art historian Godfrey Barker (Chair); Colin Wiggins, Special Projects Curator, National Gallery, London; Roy Bolton, art historian and Director of Sphinx Fine Art; Adam Dant, winner of the 2002. Jerwood Drawing Prize; the Belgian collector Alain Servais; Anke Adler-Slottke, Director, Christie’s International; and 2009 joint winners Ghost of a Dream.

The Shortlisted artists: Painting: Charles Moxon, Mia Brownell, Georgia Dodson, Jeff Muhs, Karim Hamid, Ethan Pollock, Christoph Steinmeyer, Brad Woodfin, Wieland Payer, Karina Chechik and Masaki Yada. The Guest artists: Yinka Shonibare, MBE’s ‘Earth’ is part of a larger sculptural series originally commissioned by The Israel Museum and entitled ‘Earth, Wind, Fire and Water’; it revolves around one central idea: cultural cross-pollination. Shonibare was a Turner prize nominee in 2004, and was also awarded the decoration of MBE. He has exhibited at the Venice Biennial and internationally at leading museums worldwide.

Ali Assaf will be showing his video work “Narciso” which was shown at the Iraq Pavilion Venice Biennale 2011. This work was inspired by the first visit to his home town, Al Basrah, after 36 years. Looking at an illustration of Caravaggio’s “Narciso”. Assaf has studied at the Institute of Fine Art, Baghdad, Iraq and the Acadamy of Fine Arts, Rome, Italy. Since the late 1960s he has had solo shows and participated in collective exhibitions in Europe, North Africa and the Middle-East.

Lluís Barba was shortlisted in The Young Masters Art Prize, 2009 and as part of the on-going support of the prize he was invited to exhibit at The Courtauld Institute of Art, Somerset House, WC2 displaying works relating to the history of academic painting and the space of the salon (hosted by East Wing IX.
