A Moving Exhibition - Arc Gallery
A University of East London (UEL) student is the chief curator of a major travelling exhibition that is enabling artists from around the world and UEL students to showcase their work and build on London’s reputation as a cultural and creative capital.
Antria Pelekanou is a MA Fine Art student at the School of Architecture and the Visual Arts (AVA) at UEL and she is the chief curator of a moving exhibition, a project which involves 7 UEL students and includes 56 other artists globally.
The exhibition is a mixture of professional and novice artwork and it highlights creative art projects and initiatives currently in London. The project will be shown at five different venues around the capital including the Vyner Street Gallery in Hackney and Acquire the Arts in Battersea.
The artists and exhibitions vary from one venue to another and the projects aims are to engage each community in the course of daily life by „moving London through art.‟
Antria, who is originally from Cyprus, said: “I‟m really excited about curating this project; it‟s been challenging and enterprising. During my internship at the Lloyd Gill Gallery recently, I learnt how a gallery is run and now I have a great opportunity to put it into practice.
“Everyone knows that London is the biggest city of Art in Europe – if not the world, and the best place for this exhibition. The range of art on display includes painting, drawing, print-making, sculpture, video, artist‟s books, installations and performance art, everyone is welcome to attend and it‟s free.”
The exhibition features some of the best undergraduate and postgraduate students at UEL and professional and novice artists from around the world, including Brazil, Israel, and Portugal.
Exhibiting artists in the second moving exhibition include photographers Colin Hampden-White, Tomoko Sakanishi, Mary Jane Opie, Elisabeth Molin and Graham Evans, as well as painters Henry Whysall, Mark Lawrence, Alison Johnson, Antria Pelekanou, Jill Tegan Doherty, Jay Heron and Agnieszka Bak.
Grenville Davey, Programme leader in MA Fine Art at the AVA said: “This is a really ambitious project that has been really well managed by Antria. It shows the exceptional talent we have at UEL and it also allows our students to gain an all round practical experience and business skills as they manage their work and engage with other artists globally.”
The second moving exhibition will be at the Arc Gallery from the 7th – 12th of May and it will continue to Wilson William‟s Gallery in Hackney one week later (13-20 May 2010). An exhibition book featuring the artists and their work will be on sale at all the venues.
