Once again, the international galleries attending the 43rd ART COLOGNE will cover the entire spectrum of the fine arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. Offering a showcase of select works and carefully assembled presentations, they will provide a fascinating insight into the past and present of the artistic avant-garde. No other art fair offers an overview of such concentration and quality. In what is a reflection of today’s globalised art market, the galleries participating in ART COLOGNE come from all the major art centres of the world, including established markets in the West as well as emerging ones in the East and South. The 43rd ART COLOGNE will take place in Cologne from 22nd to 26th April 2009. For a total of five days, some 180 galleries from Germany and abroad will be presenting modern classics, post-war art and contemporary art. ART COLOGNE will offer painting, sculpture, installations, video art, photography, works on paper, editions and multiples in a select presentation of the healthy variety of the modern and contemporary art trade in Europe and overseas. The latest ART COLOGNE news Harald Falckenberg to receive ART COLOGNE Prize Dr. Harald Falckenberg will receive the ART COLOGNE Prize 2009. With this prize, the Federal Association of German Galleries and Editions (BDVG) and Koelnmesse will honour one of the most important art collectors in Germany. 23 New Positions New Positions', the Fair's sponsorship scheme for young artists, is designed as a career springboard for art-market newcomers. Twenty-three young artists from nine countries have been selected to exhibit. They were chosen by the BVDG and a selection panel. There will also be a special prize - the Audi Art Award for the best young artist. The prize-giving ceremony will be held at 3 pm on Friday, 24 April at the ART COLOGNE. The artistic future The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) has developed a new concept for the Art Cologne exhibition: this year’s focus is on exchange, dialogue and different forms of presentation. The KHM students have invited fellow students from other international art schools to a collaboration beyond market mechanisms. ADKV-ART COLOGNE Prize for Art Criticism The Association of German Kunstvereine (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Kunstvereine / ADKV) honours with this award the work of freelance art critics in the press or other media who engage with contemporary art and its social context. The ADKV also honours the exceptional work of art clubs. The award ceremony for the freelance art critics will take place on April 23 at the ART COLOGNE. The art clubs will be honoured on April 25. Special show: Wilderness to garden to wilderness The special show staged by the Photographische Sammlung/ SK Stiftung Kultur is an ART COLOGNE highlight. Vegetation in photography is the central theme of the exhibition, with particular focus on the representation of wilderness - the pristine natural world untouched by man. The exhibition features work by: Robert Adams; Eugène Atget; Peter Boerboom + Carola Vogt; Jitka Hanzlová and many more. ZADIK presents Joseph Beuys This year's exhibition of the Zentralarchiv des internationalen Kunsthandels e.V. (ZADIK) focusses on Joseph Beuys. It highlights his highly productive working relationships with the gallery owners who supported him in the early part of his career. A special issue of the journal sediment will be published to mark the ZADIK exhibition. Lavishly illustrated, it contains interviews with gallery owners and people at the forefront of events. More compact, clearer, more concentrated in April 2009, ART COLOGNE will be held for the first time in Hall 11. Located directly adjacent to the new Entrance South/Barmer Straße, the art event is once again presenting its face to the city. Set in a modern, attractive building offering easy accessibility for arriving exhibitors and visitors, the new compact layout will occupy two levels. Modern classics and post-war art will occupy Level 1. Level 2 will present contemporary galleries. Open Space and New Contemporaries, proven successful platforms for young and cutting-edge production, will be integrated into level 2, placing them directly in the context of the current market. The members of the international Advisory Board have been named — these include: Hendrik A. Berinson (Gallery Berinson, Berlin), Jörn Bötnagel (BQ, Cologne), Valerie Carberry (Valerie Carberry Gallery Chicago), Darren Flook (Hotel, London), Steve Hanson (China Art Objects Galleries, Los Angeles), Dennis Kimmerich (Gallery Dennis Kimmerich, Düsseldorf), Christian Nagel (Gallery Christian Nagel, Berlin/Cologne), Niklas Svennung (Gallery Chantal Crousel, Paris), and Hans Mayer (Gallery Hans Mayer, Düsseldorf). New Talents has been renamed “New Positions” ART COLOGNE’s successful collaboration with the Federal Association of German Galleries and Editions (BVDG) to promote selected young artists will continue under a revised name: “New Positions”. This change is intended to reflect the topographical complexity of new creative production. Individual shows of selected artists will continue to be found at the stands of the galleries representing them. Five Years of Open Space – A successful experiment celebrates an anniversary In 2009, OPEN SPACE will celebrate its fifth anniversary with ART COLOGNE. Liberating the art fair from traditional staging, embracing booth-less, project-oriented architecture adapted to each individual art presentation, Open Space has succeeded as a laboratory for new art positions to encounter the market on their own terms. In preparation for the fifth anniversary, an international committee consisting of Vasif Kortun (Istanbul), Stefanie Kreuzer (Morsbroich) and Beatrix Ruf (Zurich) has been assembled to recommend notable young artists for presentation, along with their galleries, at Open Space 2009.
