Exhibition
Interval; A Narrative Psychosis - Cornerhouse
Interval; A Narrative Psychosis’ comprises of a multi-channel video installation, including ‘Amnesia; A Rehearsal’ (2010) and ‘Sarah Winchester; A Mystery House’ (2010), plus a series of monochrome photographs.
...The exhibition draws on Yung’s recent investigative journey across Hong Kong and California. Throughout 2007 and 2008, Kai-Oi Jay Yung undertook a research trip with a focus on pinpointing parallels between the topographical, social, and political landscapes across Kowloon to New Territories, San Francisco, LA and into the Mojave dessert. Yung accumulated over 60 hours of footage that combine chance encounters with pre-arranged interviews and location specific filming. After producing the counterpoint piece for this show, ‘Amnesia; A Rehearsal’ (2010), Yung has taken the primary focal themes from the film to distil the footage into a series of eponymous themed short films, exploring Love, Architecture, Present, Death, Incantation and Journey; all presented within a labyrinthine installation. From unspoken ceremonies, traces of invasion and colonization, the South China seas to Palm Springs, a Hong Kong face-reader to an Alcatraz inmate- these places and voices transform and intersperse the gallery space.
‘Yung’s interview with the director of ‘The Sarah Winchester Mystery House’ in San Jose, resulted in ‘Sarah Winchester; A Mystery House’ (2010). This documentary ‘reveals the life of 19th Century figure Sarah Winchester, heiress of the first repeating double-barrel rifle. Personal tragedy led to 38 years of incessant construction of an uncanny and disconcerting million dollar mansion, driven by midnight séances and communications with the deceased. During a residency undertaken by Yung in Sherborne (January - 2010) Yung was compelled to revisit the Winchester legacy, inciting the film ‘Amnesia; A Rehearsal’. This narrative sees Yung’s interpretation of Sarah’s occult fixations. Yung restages Sarah’s biography with pre-scripted and improvised reconstructions, interweaving stories with Jane Austen and Marigold Verity, a harpist in Sherborne, Dorset, which links Yung’s residency at the Jane Austen Centre back to San Jose.
‘Interval; A Narrative Psychosis’ questions our perceptions of reality and artifice and the fragility of any spiritual truth.
Kai-Oi Jay Yung features as part of Edition, Cornerhouse’s platform for innovative visual art and cross disciplinary collaborations.
