b. 1954, Santender, Spain

Although influenced by ideas ranging from philosophy to multiculturalism, Juan Uslé’s lyrical abstract works do not aim to be in any way representational, rather they convey his personal vision of the world, which is poetic rather than narrative. His paintings are not a window on the world but are an area of dialogue, which he probes and explores. Many of his paintings lead the viewer into a labyrinthine space in which Uslé’s precise articulation seems to point in a specific direction while still, paradoxically, leaving the way open to the viewer’s interpretation.

Juan Uslé’s solo exhibition Switch on/Switch Off toured from CAC Málaga to Fundacíon Bancaja, Valencia, Spain in April – June 2008. Other recent solo exhibitions include Fundación Marcelino Botín, Santander; SMAK, Stedlijk Museum voor Actuale Kunst, Ghent; IMMA, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. Uslé’s work has been exhibited widely in group exhibitions including Venice Biennale 2005 and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, 2004. The artist lives and works in Santander and New York.
