MAGGI HAMBLING : NEW SEA SCULPTURE - Marlborough Fine Art
Marlborough Fine Art is delighted to announce a major exhibition of the latest developments in Maggi Hambling’s widely celebrated series of work inspired by the North Sea.
These new sculptures, reliefs, paintings and etchings contain the explosive energy - uniquely Hambling’s own - found in the now famous sculpture Scallop on Aldeburgh beach. The restless movement of the sea continues to obsess the artist and has never been so convincingly realised as in these latest works.
Hambling says: "As the waves of the North Sea voraciously consume our coast, these new works respond to the energy of their action as they break. This sea, the widest of mouths, roaring or laughing, is always seductive. Life and death mysteriously co-exist in the timeless rhythm of the waves. I seek to distil their action as they rise and dissolve, poised to crash."
Hambling's waves are teaming with faces, animals, people, mouths in action and the moon rising. The rich texture of the sea is physically stated, transforming the fluidity of water into the solidity of bronze.
A fully illustrated catalogue will be published.
