Meliha Gunenc, was born in Turkey, where she studied fashion and later worked in the textile industry as a freelance designer.  She then went on to study Fine Art at Marmara University before leaving Turkey for London.  In 2008 she studied Art and Design at St Martin’s School of Art with further studies in Music and Drawing at the City Lit in London.

Meliha has had exhibitions both in Turkey and in Holland.  This show will mark her first solo exhibition in London.

With ‘ Memories’, Meliha Gunenc delivers to us a Pandora’s box of remembered delights and deliberations.  Meliha Gunenc works in a variety of media including two and three-dimensional forms.  Her works on canvas are concerned with time, texture and layering, revealing strata-like images of her memories, those distant histories, hewn and brought forth from the quarries of her notions from the past.

These long told tales then resurface as colours, shark fin shadows of greys and blues, swimming and darting across the canvas.  Experiences caught fleck like, in the corner of her eye or memories from the back of her mind. All is fragmented, not broken but dispersed so that the viewer is unable to see the image as a whole and must cast around to create an image from the sum of its parts.
