Philip Guston Philip Guston Works on Paper - Timothy Taylor Gallery

Philip Guston is a painter’s painter: uninhibited by prevailing movements and continuously pursuing his own language of representation he has managed to move between abstraction and his own idiosyncratic forms of representation with a freedom few artists possess. The current show of his works on paper at Timothy Taylor traces Guston’s development from the 1950s through to 1980 and attempts to capture this decisive change. Allegedly a difficult and cantankerous man who was expelled from school along with Jackson Pollock for complaining that the school privileged sport over arts, Guston has continually pressed for the autonomy of the artist and their right to work outside of prevailing movements or trends.
