Pioneers of the Downtown Scene New York 1970s - Barbican

Bookmark and Share

Laurie Anderson, Trisha Brown and Gordon Matta-Clark led a vibrant Manhattan art community through a period of economic crisis. Their multi-disciplinary work, individual and collective, has been brought together for the first time in Barbican Art Gallery’s: Pioneers of the Downtown Scene, New York 1970s. This major exploration combines sculpture, drawing, photography and dance daringly created in response to New York City’s dereliction. An inspirational context, the city is used as backdrop, stage and canvas for the artists to make and exhibit their work.
