Mark Leadbetter - Sartorial Contemporary Art
Attack of the Triffids (I heard your voice on the radio, Jo). Cast iron, mixed media.
Following in the spirit of his intruguing contribution to the 9 Sheds show on the 18 th & 25 th of September, Mark Leadbetter imparts his BRUXIST CRUX. A collection of new three dimensional works heralding the conclusion of the gallery's involvement with Street Art.
“Remember that your life in prison is like a dog in a box. What you've got to do is make the dog bigger than the box. Not in a bad way, like a mad wolf in a matchbox. But more like a giant, a well behaved Alsatian in a Kleenex box.” Michael Winner ( Brass Eye, Ser.1 Ep.5, 26/2/97)
While this quote bears little relevance to my life or work, it has put me in mind of an apt dog analogy for the upcoming show. My works are whimsical, gaudy, uncompromising, the everyday is utilized and embellished, creating celebratory souvenirs of the day to day. BRUXIST CRUX will see these works alongside the work of selected street artists.
My art is a puppy, just starting out, excitable and playful, chewing on existing forms, making them it's own. My works will form a stark rebuttal to the ill-tempered pit bull that is street art, marking its territory at every opportunity; usurping and degrading the everyday forms that have inspired my current practice.
