ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE - Alison Jacques Gallery
Artlyst will be featuring this exhibition opening on 13th October. By the time of his death in 1989, Robert Mapplethorpe's self portraits, nudes, and flower photographs were already seminal images of the 20th Century. Fuelled by a passion for classical sculpture and strongly influenced by his repressive Catholic upbringing Mapplethorpe quickly found expression through visual means. From his earliest sculptural works and Polaroids Mapplethorpe demonstrated a unique ability for composition and powerful symbolism. Whether human or inanimate, his subjects functioned as a conduit through which the artist could communicate frankly his ideas about sexuality, love, and death.
