The Serpentine Gallery Map Marathon will bring together an unprecedented group from diverse fields to showcase possible maps for the coming decade. The Map Marathon will explore all forms of mapping, of data, space and time, multiple dimensions, language and the body. The event will uncover the influence and possibilities of mapping in our world today.

The Internet has brought maps of every kind into our daily lives. Maps have become easier to create, change, develop collaboratively and share. Depicting geographical areas, mindscapes and digital realms alike, these multidimensional maps express endlessly interconnected ideas and issues.

This is the fifth in the annual series of Serpentine Gallery Marathons. Conceived by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Serpentine Gallery Marathons are a unique and innovative series of events that challenge notions of art, culture, science, technology, and methods of public discourse and debate. The first Marathon, Interview Marathon, 2006, featured interviews with leading figures in contemporary culture over 24 hours. This was followed by Experiment Marathon, 2007, Manifesto Marathon, 2008, and Poetry Marathon, 2009.

Many of the maps presented in this year’s Marathon and the discussion they provoke will be included in a forthcoming book to be published by Thames & Hudson in 2011.
