Centre for Recent Drawing’s alternative Christmas show- SILENT NIGHT.

MAXIME ANGEL - KAYDE ANOBILE - JENNY CAMPBELL - ALFONSO DI TROLIO - MAKI ISHII - PAUL KINDERSLEY - HOLLIE MCARTHUR - GRACE SCHOFIELD - MAYUMI YAMASE

Ghostly remnants and delicate forms inhabit a twilight zone of dimming lights and colder days. Quiet moments of introspection and private conversations between artist, material and idea slowly extricate themselves f...rom line, leaking into fragile being. Clarified by the artist from the saturated overstimulation of everyday and collective observances, drawing here proves a vivid tool for the transformation of experience.

Maki Ishii’s drawings and sculptures create a pictorial illusion within space, where multiple viewing points coexist and deny the possibility of any unified reading or interpretation; Jenny Campbell also explores this spatial realm, dextrously connecting depiction and object through line, exploring everyday materials as she goes. Grace Schofield’s exploration of the real and virtual sees her creating digitally animated ‘portraits’, characters only existing as computer animation, the pixilation causing and uneasy shift away from recognizable features. Mayumi Yamase’s serene amoebic drawings, simultaneously alien and comforting colours and forms, organic and vaguely human brought alive. Alfonso di Trolio’s precise hand-drawn simplifications of spatial architecture strive for machine perfection, in minimal line and colour. Using her performances as raw material, Hollie McArthur depicts the mechanics of human relationships, whilst Paul Kindersley’s work shows a more introspective interaction between artist, personal history and pop culture, creating estranged images from a backwash of shared experiences. Maxime Angel's believes all her drawing is performance - a manic necessity that allows the exploration of her own sexuality, emotions and experiences; addressing identity and gender Kayde Anobile’s quiet drawings on wood, their beauty boldly reassessing historical. Drawing engages the intimate and hermetic relationship between artist and process; frenzied in creation yet calm in appearance, these works are deceptively ‘silent’.

This show is curated by artist Paul Kindersley, recipient of the C4RD Residential Curatorship 2010-2011.
