Sound Kapital - Proud Camden
Proud Camden South Gallery presents Sound Kapital: Beijing's Music Underground, a photographic portrait of contemporary Beijing as seen by Matthew Niederhauser.
The exhibition presents large-format images of urban development projects in Beijing alongside portraits of performers involved in a growing counterculture that fuels the underground music scene in China’s capital, forcing us to contemplate the connection between these seemingly disparate aspects of life in the city.
Niederhauser’s work prompts its audience to examine the effects of a rapidly mutating urban landscape on the communities and individuals suspended within its web, and its growing connection to the reactionary music that swells outside government-controlled media channels.
This exhibition provides an unrivalled portrait of a city and the developing relationship between its built environment and inhabitants.
