Exhibition
Surya Buck / Henrik Potter - Supine Studios
To show the works of two artists who work on or around the image and its derivatives. To not display two dimensional work on the wall from conventional view points.
Both artists create series. They make not finished pieces but moments of rest between one trial and the next. Each trial an agreement to investigate a thought, de-construct it, transform it and alter it, till it is right.
Both artists’ practices are concerned with the act of decision-making. Economy of variables, self-regulated confinements, and an interest in imposed formats by industrial standards of manufacture. Re-contextualising and appropriating shapes, colours and sizes, while sustaining dialogue with a history of image making, sets the middle ground between the two artists on show and suggests revisiting discussions on formats within art.
Dealing with two practices that escape a defined form, that are in essence exercises, processes, attempts; how should such work be displayed: work that is loose, transformative, evolving, moving?
For the last show in our curatorial season, we wanted to address the history of salon hanging with work that reflects the conversations and exchanges between two dimensional media: painting, photography, collage and printing. And its visits outside the flatlands.
To hang a show that will skip and slide along series, from one piece to the next, from one artists to the other, always focusing on the intersection and the dialogues it sets forth. We envisage a show of visual panning and trajectories, of repetition and difference across the gallery's six planes.
This is an opportunity for closure to the Autumn/ Winter Session 09 so please join us at the PV for Mince Pies and Mulled Wine.A publication is to sum up the shows with documentation of each one and the artists response to Fay Nicolson's "Questionnaire", a project running alongside the curatorial project. An edition of 25 publications will be available to buy on demand and a copy will be on display through out the exhibition. We hope you have enjoyed the shows and thank you for all your support. Stay in touch for future projects.
