The Island London Snorkelling Team - Testbed 1

The Island is the London Snorkelling Team’s full-blown show: a theatrical, architectural and musical realisation of the island depicted in their recent Audio Recording and Map (as played on Jarvis Cocker’s BBC show). This collaboration with Testbed takes the performances enjoyed by audiences at Latitude and the Barbican Centre and stages it in a grand replica of the island – a miniature festival including crazy-golf course, local market, barbecued meat, obscure traditional games, fortune telling and local brews.

At the heart of the evening will be two sets from the LST, joined by science teacher and voodoo specialist Dr Inshiquin (played by Ed Gaughan, as seen in Skeletons, Michael Powell award winner at this year’s Edinburgh film festival) and incompetent conjuror Braeburn Valmont (Perrier-winner Will Adamsdale, co-creator of The Receipt). As ever, there will be stunning overhead-projector animation from the Perrett Brothers. Plus: guest acting appearances from members of Filter,
The LST write short, sharp tunes that reflect a love of unusual instruments, wonky cartoon music and1950s exotica. Their show played in London at Shunt Vaults, South Bank, Barbican Centre, Bishopsgate Institute, Stoke Newington International Airport, King’s Place and Latitude festival. They are also confirmed to play End of the Road and Supernormal festivals later this year. Their first album (distributed by Kudos) was launched in February at a sell-out gig at the Vortex, London. After a support slot for Pere Ubu on the Southbank, the LST were made the official orchestra of the London Institute of ‘Pataphysics. The players are Tom Haines (drums, laptop, percussion, field recording), Chris Branch (Moog, Farfisa), Ross Hughes (Baby Bass, baritone saxophone, clarinet, cavaquinho), Pascal Wyse: trombone, voice, field recording
“Very high quality tinkly-bonk” – Richard Williams
“Never before have I seen such musical competence mixed with such carefully arranged incompetence and cunning humour. I want to see it all again right now” – Jonny Trunk
Testbed1 is an arts and performance space that will be used specifically as a place for artists to experiment and try out new ideas. A group of eminent artists, writers, architects and filmmakers and curators form part of a ‘committee with no agenda’, which will oversee the programming. This group includes architect Will Alsop, filmmakers Squint Opera, the artist Bruce McLean, writer Mel Gooding, ex-artistic director of Riverside Studios David Gothard, curator Donald Smith and Testbed1’s landlord, Kevin Cassandro (among others). The type of events we will stage range from art performance pieces, to theatre, to lecture series.
The Doodle Bar White-washed from top to bottom, the Doodle Bar invites visitors to doodle on the walls, tables, chairs and even the waiters. During the show, the doodlebar will be transformed into the Valmont Arms, the island’s only permanent public drinking establishment, named after the landholding family.
